Types of Sentences in English/Sentence Classifications.

Hello Friends, In this blog post(Types of Sentences in English) I am going to let you know about the sentences in the English language.

As we know the set of words is called a sentence(Types of Sentences in English).

So using this blog post(Types of Sentences in English) I am going to let you know about all possible types of sentence classifications and sentences inside them.

Broadly, there are four classifications of sentences(Types of Sentences in English) and all categories have different kinds of sentences as per their meaning.

So each sentence that you write or speak will fall into one sentence type of each sentence classification.|Types of Sentences in English|

For example, the exclamatory sentence of Classification 1 can be an affirmative sentence of Classification 2,…

…a simple sentence of Classification 3, and a simple sentence of Classification 4.

Please see the below sentence example for your better understanding:

I can’t believe it! – (classification 1-[exclamatory] classification 2-[negative] classification 3-[model] classification 4-[simple] )

Now we will explain all the sentence classifications with all sentence types inside them.

Types of Sentences in English

Classification 1:

Assertive/Declarative Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that is not an optative, exclamatory, imperative, or interrogative, is considered an assertive or declarative sentence.

So to understand this type you should understand other sentence types of this classification first.

Example:

I like Ravi and Uday but I like Mohit most.
I left on time, but I could not reach early.
I don’t think this movie is worth watching.

Interrogative Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that seems to be asking a question is considered an interrogative sentence.

Example:

Do you know me?
Did he come home yesterday?
When is he coming tomorrow?

Imperative Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that seems to be ordering or praying is considered an imperative sentence.

Example:

Come here.
Please come here.
Don’t play with him?
please don’t talk to me.

Exclamatory Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that gives the feeling of surprise or wonder is considered an exclamatory sentence.

These feelings could be happy, sad, wonder, fear, etc.

Example:

What a shot!
Thank you so much!
Oh no!
How tragic!
Not good!
Incredible!
It’s scary!
Oh my god!

Optative Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that seems to be wishing something is considered an optative sentence.

These sentences also have an exclamatory sign at the end of each sentence like exclamatory sentences.

Example:

Wish you a very happy birthday!
May you get a good job!
May you not get a good job!

Classification 2:

Affirmative Sentence:

Definition:

Affirmative sentences are those which are not negative and interrogative.

Example:

He was peeping through the window.
You are my favorite player.
Thank you so much.

Negative Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that has a feeling of being denied or not done something is considered a negative sentence.

These types of sentences usually include the not, neither, nor, etc words.

Example:

He was not peeping through the window.
May you not get a good job.

Interrogative Sentece:

Definition:

These types of sentences ask for a question.

Example:

Did he meet you that day?

Negative & Interrogative Sentence:

Definition:

These sentences have mixed feelings of question and negation.

Example:

Did he not take the parcel yesterday?

Classification 3:

Simple Sentence:

Definition:

These are those sentences that do not perform any actions or do not have any action verb inside them.

Example:

You have a nice car.
You are a good boy.

Tense Sentence:

Definition:

These are sentences that are classified into three categories – Present, past, and future.

Example:

Ram goes to market.
Ram went to market.
Ram will go to market.

Model verb Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that has a model verb inside it is called a model verb sentence.

Example:

You shall go to the market.
You should do it.
May I come in?
You might do this.

Imperative Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that seems to be ordering or praying is considered an imperative sentence.

Example:

Come here.
Please come here.
Don’t play with him?
please don’t talk to me.

causative verb Sentence:

Definition:

A causative verb sentence is that which has a causative verb inside it like Let, Get, Make, Have, or Help.

Example:

Let him go.
I got my father to purchase a laptop.
I made him ready to go with me.
I have an engineer to finish this work.
you should always help the poor.

Passive Sentence:

Definition:

You might have heard of active and passive sentences while studying English in your academic course.

There are few rules for converting an active sentence into a passive sentence.

With the help of the rules given in the chart, you can easily make active to passive sentences.

Example:

This work is done by me.
they should be sent.
They are caught by the police.
They were sent to Delhi for some urgent work.

Direct & Indirect Sentence:

Definition:

You would have also gone through these types of direct & indirect sentences while studying the English language.

There are few rules to convert a direct sentence into an indirect sentence.

With the help of the below chart rules, you can easily convert direct to indirect sentences.

Example:

Direct – Ram said ‘he goes to school’
Indirect – Ram said that he went to school.

Classification 4:

Simple Sentence:

Definition:

To understand this category sentence, you should first know about the clause.

A clause is nothing but the combination of subject and predicate.

Clause –> (sub+predeicate) Predicate –>(verb + object part).

Each sentence must be a clause but each clause may not may not be a sentence.

A clause is a sentence only if it is a complete(independent clause).

A sentence that has only one independent clause is known as a simple sentence.

This simple sentence is quite different from the classification 3 simple sentence in some contexts.

So the simple sentence of this classification may or may not be the simple sentence of classification 3.

But the simple sentence of classification 3 must be a simple sentence of classification 4.

Example:

He has a pen.
Was she going back to her home?
He made me write this letter.

He has a pen –> Classification 1-[Assertive], Classification 2-[Affirmative], Classification 3-[Simple], Classification 4-[Simple].

Compound Sentence:

Definition:

When a sentence has two or more independent clauses and they are…

… joined with a coordinate conjunction(and, or, but, yet, so, nor) is considered a compound sentence.

Example:

The girls sang and the boys danced.
It was not easy to come yet he came to meet me.
he did not have books so he could not study.

Complex Sentence:

Definition:

A sentence that has at least one dependent and at least one independent clause is known as a complex sentence.

Example:

They played football even though it was raining.
When I reached home I called him.
If you meet me today, I will give you a book and I will take a pen from you.
Since I am fond of music, I should buy this mobile.
